My name is Macy McCann. I am a dance artist and filmmaker currently based in Boston. I am currently earning a BFA in contemporary dance from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee.
I am interested in pushing the barriers of dance through exploring the synthesis of movement, music, film, and other art mediums. I have created and screened multiple dance films, and have had work featured in both the second and third annual Boston Conservatory Dance on film festival. I have created original works, and am currently working on my senior choreographic project, set to premiere in December. I am interested in movement research and improv and have participated in b12 in Berlin and GagaLab in Tel Aviv. My creative process and movement have been influenced by Doug Varone and Dancers and my work with Doug Varone in his choreographic workshop, DEVICES. I am fascinated by somatic awareness and its relationship to movement, taking interest in both the Alexander Technique and Countertechnique.
Growing up, I trained at both the School of the Albany Berkshire Ballet and Eleanor's School of Dance. I am an alumna of Emma Willard School, an all-girl's boarding and day school in Troy, NY. I was part of the Emma Willard Dance Company, and completed multiple Advanced Artist Projects. After high school, I chose to begin my professional dance journey by attending Boston Conservatory. While studying I have trained in ballet and modern styles, including Limón, Horton, Graham, release, eclectic modern, and other contemporary/postmodern variations. During my course of study I have performed in works by Doug Varone, Hope Boykin, Jennifer Archibald, Daniel Pelzig, and Asia Pyron, as well as improvisation-based shows, and various student choreographic works.
I was born in Oxnard, CA into a military family. Growing up, I moved around a lot and lived all around the country, which has gifted me the curiosity and affinity to learn, travel, explore and broaden my worldview. My goal is to experience dance, art, and culture across the globe. I was also raised as a lifelong vegan, which has caused me to lead an environmentally conscious and sustainable lifestyle and has fostered my commitment to health and wellness.
I consider myself to be an open-minded, adventurous, and thoughtful individual, which allows me to bring my whole self and authenticity to my art. I would also describe myself as someone who is easy going and spontaneous. I find joy in experiencing nature and the outdoors and love hiking, running, camping, swimming, and snowboarding, calisthenics. I am often inspired by film and art aesthetics and a broad range of music. I find myself reading, writing, meditating, and playing/reading cards. I love experiencing live music and am currently employed as a Live Nation security guard.
One of my most important philosophies in life is that everything happens the way it is meant to happen; therefore, I am able to put my trust in the unknown. I am very spiritual and allow my connection with source to guide me on my artistic and personal journey. My lifestyle and life experiences allow me to shape my ideas and bring them to life through my art. I also have never been one to take myself too seriously, so everything I create has a tad of irony and humor. I am to create social commentary that is simultaneously satirical and profound.
I hope that my work will resonate with people and bring the artistry of dance to a broader audience so that more can experience the joy that I, and many others have found in this beautiful art form!
Love,
Macy <3
